Dear DIYnot, I wish to install Zone designed downlighters over bath and understand I need a 30ma RCD in the lighting circuit for proper protection. Perhaps breaking in to the lighting circuit and installing an rcd fused spur to cover the bathroom light (so the rest of the lights are non rcd)and other equipment on the bathroom lighting (fan, shaver light etc), shower on rcd.

Do I need to move both the light rings circuits (upstairs and down) onto the rcd side to stop this one switch from tripping the rcd.

A fault to earth on an RCD protected socket will cause the 30mA RCD to operate first, preventing the loss of supply to the whole installation. Types of RCD There are different types of RCD , that respond to varying types of earth fault current, which need to be selected depending on the type of installation. However, all bathroom services must be protected by a 30mA RCD. All new or additions including a new extractor fan, must conform to these requirements, whether out not it needs earth. Whether it needs earth or not depends on what the manufacturer says.

A RCD protection and current using equipment (other than fixed current using equipment – such as a washing machine, if suitable for use in a bathroom, connected through a fused connection unit) in zone required 30mA RCD protection. Of course once the earth fault current reaches 30mA the RCD will trip, but in the 30ms or so that it takes to trip, the current may well increase to much higher levels, hence you can feel the shock when 30mA is apparently imperceptible to humans. Suitable for bathroom zone if used in conjunction with a 30mA RCD.

All circuits in a bathroom should be protected by a 30ma RCD (Residual Circuit Device).
