Remove light fixture

Carefully disentangle the wires of the fixture from the wires in the junction box, and pull it free from the ceiling. Remove old light fixture.

Once the wires are disconnecte unscrew here and the fixture is off the ceiling. Fluorescent tubes contain mercury and are harmful to the environment, and therefore should not be disposed of with household trash. Unscrew the screws or nuts holding the fixture base to the ceiling box.


Lower the fixture base and remove the electrical tape or wire nuts from the black (hot) wire, white (neutral) wire, an if present, green (ground) wire. Touch a light fixture only after disconnecting it from the room’s electrical circuit. Then, remove the cover, bulbs, and fixture base as needed.


Replace the bulbs or the entire fixture to light up your home again.

Loosen the wire nuts connecting the fixture wires to the house wiring by turning them counterclockwise. Pull the wire through the clamp. If you cannot remove fixture with your hands, use the flathead screwdriver or razor knife to pry it off by sliding it under the mouth of the metal collar and prying down. Once the ceiling fixture shade is remove then remove the fixture base from the ceiling by unscrewing two little bolts that you will see attached to the base, or by removing a knurled knob fastened to a threaded tube in the center of the fixture as shown in the photo.
